Several ingredients in skincare products have been deemed potentially unsafe or harmful due to their potential to cause irritation, allergic reactions, or long-term health effects. Some of these ingredients include:
-
Parabens: These are preservatives commonly used in skincare products to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. However, they have been linked to hormone disruption and have been found in breast cancer tissue.
-
Phthalates: These are often used as plasticizers in skincare products to improve texture and fragrance retention. Phthalates have been associated with endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
-
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES): These are surfactants used in skincare and personal care products to create foam and lather. They can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and potential long-term damage to the skin barrier.
-
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs): These are used as preservatives in skincare products to prevent bacterial growth. However, they can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and have been classified as carcinogens by some health organizations.
-
Synthetic fragrances: These are often used to enhance the scent of skincare products. However, many synthetic fragrances contain phthalates and other potentially harmful chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions and irritate the skin.
-
Mineral oil and petroleum derivatives: These are commonly used as emollients and occlusives in skincare products to lock in moisture. However, they can clog pores, exacerbate acne, and may be contaminated with impurities.
-
Chemical sunscreens: Certain chemical UV filters, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone, have raised concerns due to their potential to disrupt hormones, cause skin irritation, and harm coral reefs.
-
Synthetic colors: Artificial colors, such as FD&C dyes, are used to enhance the appearance of skincare products. However, some synthetic colors have been linked to skin irritation and allergic reactions.
It's important to note that individual reactions to skincare ingredients can vary, and what may be safe for one person may cause problems for another. It's always a good idea to read ingredient labels carefully, do research, and consult with a healthcare professional if you have specific concerns. Additionally, opting for products like ours that are made with natural, organic, and non-toxic ingredients can help minimize exposure to potentially harmful substances.
To take things a step further, we asked our organic chemist what he thought. The answer seems to change depending on who you ask and the deliverability of the product, meaning its dilution, application, and stage of pregnancy. I shared a previous blog post on pregnancy which you can find HERE. I always like to error on the extra side of caution when sharing but I also share NAHA recommendations, which is the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy and none of our ingredients make that no no list. I personally used all of The Golden Secrets products throughout my entire pregnancy except Goddess Shaping Body Oil and Aphrodisiac Glow Oil. Goddess is highly detoxifying and best used to help firm the skin post pregnancy and breastfeeding and Aphrodisiac has Jasmine essential oil in it which helps balance hormones, something we don't want to disrupt during pregnancy but is perfection for any other time.
This is what our organic chemist said, "I’m not a doctor, you have to check with a doctor but the following ingredients are considered not safe during the pregnancy."
- Adapalene.
- Tretinoin.
- Retinyl palmitate.
- Retinoic acid.
- Retinaldehyde.

As I've said, I used all of my products during both pregnancies, with the exception of Goddess Shaping Body Oil and Aphrodisiac Glow Oil. It is advised that you be most mindful during the first trimester and refrain from using any ingredients that are listed above. This is the time to opt for clean, non-toxic, natural skincare to make the best decision for yourself and your growing baby.
During my pregnancy, I relied on a selection of my favorite products to support my well-being and skincare routine. Among them, Womb Wisdom Skin Toning Oil was my go-to for nurturing my skin and preventing stretch marks. To maintain thick, full lashes in anticipation of postpartum changes, I turned to Long Lash. For relief from pregnancy-related discomfort and to promote skin firmness, even in intimate areas, I indulged in Royal Codes Bath Soak. To ensure my skin remained hydrated and youthful-looking, I incorporated Hydrate and Heal and Youth Beauty into my daily routine. Additionally, I pampered myself with the Instant Glow Facial Mask every two weeks, complemented by daily dry brushing and the use of gua sha stones to alleviate puffiness, discomfort, and water retention.
