Waterless skincare? Is it a marketing term or is there some real basis. Waterless skincare, also known as anhydrous skincare, originated in South Korea in 2015 and refers to products formulated without water. Instead, relies on rich ingredients like oils, butters, waxes, and oil-soluble actives.
These products are typically more concentrated than their water-based counterparts, delivering potent active ingredients and healthy oils without the need for unnecessary stabilizers. Some come as powders to mix with water at home, like our Instant Glow Facial Mask while others take the form of pure oils and/or balms.
Higher Concentration of Ingredients:
Without water as a filler, waterless products are packed with nutrient-dense, concentrated ingredients. This means more powerful doses of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, offering enhanced skincare benefits.
Fewer Preservatives:
Waterless formulations also require fewer preservatives, reducing the risk of toxins, skin irritation and allergic reactions.
Longer Shelf Life:
Because they're not diluted with water, these products have a longer shelf life, making them more durable and effective over time.
When Water is Valuable in Skincare:
While waterless skincare has its benefits, water-based products also play an important role, particularly in hydration and absorption. One of the key ways water is used beneficially in skincare is through hydrosols, also known as floral waters or herbal distillates, like our Aura Beauty Mist.
Hydrosols are the byproduct of steam distillation used to extract essential oils from plants. Unlike essential oils, which are concentrated and can be irritating if used improperly, hydrosols are much gentler and contain water-soluble plant compounds. These natural waters are great for delivering hydration and soothing effects to the skin.
Why Water is Important in Skincare:
-
Hydration:
Water is a primary hydrator for the skin. In water-based products, it helps increase moisture content in the skin, making it look plump, healthy, and refreshed. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid or our preferred Tremella Mushroom (often found in water-based products) are excellent at attracting and holding water in the skin, providing long-lasting hydration. -
Delivery System:
Water acts as an effective carrier for active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin. When combined with hydrating agents, it helps deliver nutrients more efficiently, ensuring that your skin reaps the full benefits of the formula. This is why we recommend applying Aura Beauty Mist first, then while the skin is still damp apply Youth Beauty Face Oil or Heal All Oil. -
Hydrosols for Soothing and Balancing:
Hydrosols provide more than just hydration—they have gentle therapeutic properties. For instance, rose water hydrosol is known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits, while neroli hydrosol reduces inflammation, and shrinks and tightens pores. Two hydrosols in our Aura Beauty Mist. Hydrosols are particularly great for those who want the benefits of botanicals without the intensity of essential oils. -
Refreshing Texture:
Water-based products tend to feel light and refreshing on the skin, making them perfect for quick hydration or cooling effects, especially in hot or humid climates. Mists, toners, and serums that include hydrosols or other water-based ingredients can refresh the skin without leaving any greasy residue.
While waterless skincare delivers concentrated nourishment, water-based products (especially those with hydrosols) play a vital role in keeping the skin hydrated, refreshed, and balanced. The right combination of waterless and water-based products can help create a well-rounded skincare routine tailored to your specific skin needs. This is why I created the Dynamic Duo, which gives your skin the synergistic balance of hydration and moisture in two simple steps. All of our oils and products, besides Aura Beauty Mist are waterless and free of any fillers, parabens, phthalates, propylene or butylene glycols, petroleum, sulfates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, silicones, pesticides, artificial dyes, fragrances, carcinogens & all synthetics.
Many people think that hydration and moisture are the same, but they are actually completely different things, and our skin needs both to thrive. Water hydrates the skin, while oil moisturizes it. The beautiful combo of Aura Beauty Mist first and Youth Beauty Face Oil second gives our skin the ability to properly absorb and benefit from each product optimally.
